Minneapolis Community & Technical College’s 17-credit Community Health Worker (CMHW) certificate trains students to become a liaison between providers, clients and agencies. Students gain an understanding of how ethics influences client care and develop a critical thinking framework for solving health care problems. The program is offered during the fall semester or can be split across spring and summer semesters.

CHW Association
The Minnesota Community Health Worker Alliance works with partners to reduce health disparities, achieve better health at a lower cost, and foster healthier communities. The organization serves as a convener, catalyst and expert resource to integrate CHW strategies. Minnesota is the only state in the United States with a statewide competency-based CHW educational program based in accredited post-secondary schools. The 14-credit program is a blend of classroom and field-based learning for those who have at least a high school diploma or GED.

Multnomah County Health Department’s Community Capacitation Center provides training and technical assistance to organizations working to establish or strengthen their community health worker programs. This support includes recruitment and hiring of CHWs, development of CHW job descriptions, and support and supervision of CHWs. The Center’s 80-hour basic curriculum consists of three components and offers skill-based orientation to the health and social services system.

State Certification Board
Aimed at promoting excellence in asthma education, the National Asthma Educator Certification Board offers certifications and recertifications for Asthma Educators. The Board offers 7-year certifications through an examination process and 5-year recertifications by continuing education credit. The National Community Health Worker Training Center within the Center for Community Health Development, Texas A&M School of Rural Public Health, has a Community Health Worker/Promotora program that consists of a 160-hour Certification Course. The course incorporates 2.5 hours per week of real-time class sessions, for a total of 60 hours. The other 100 hours are individual study, assignments and hands-on experience. Courses are designed for both online and in-person certification, and for both English and Spanish speakers.
